GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT IT CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

The PLC offers two Information Technology certificate programs:

and one combined IT/Management certificate program

The PLC's IT courses offer students maximum flexibility. You'll find it easy to design your own curriculum by selecting the courses you need from an extensive list covering all aspects in the design, management, and maintenance of websites.

Time to completion:
Students will normally be expected to complete the requirements for an IT certificate program within three years. Extensions may be granted on application to the PLC Office.

Course availability:
Course dates are staggered throughout the year. No courses are run in August. To accommodate working students, courses are offered on week nights or weekends.

Courses:
Students do not register for a specific certificate program. They register for individual courses. Because many IT courses are cross-listed in two or more certificate programs, the PLC Office will not necessarily know which certificate a student is working towards. For this reason, it is the responsibility of the student to inform the PLC Office when they have completed the certificate course load.

Admission requirements:
Certificate programs are open-registration; that is, there are no formal admission requirements. Students should, however, have a basic familiarity with the Internet and with HTML before attempting these courses. To assist in course selection, a number of courses indicate suggested background preparation. If you have any doubts about your preparation for a course, please contact the PLC Office for guidance. Students must also have access to their own computer to complete assignments.

Course credit from other programs:
Students registered in the certificates in Web Development, Information Design, or Information Management may transfer credits for a maximum of two courses from another PLC certificate, from another program at the University of Toronto, or from another institution with the approval of the PLC office. Approval will hinge on the appropriateness of the external course toward the designated certificate. The maximum number of hours that may be credited toward a certificate from an external course is 24. Students who wish to apply an external course towards a PLC IT certificate must submit the following documents: a personal curriculum vitae, the course outline, the student's grade report from the course. Fee: $50.

Textbooks:
Materials for most courses are either distributed in class or are available on the course website for downloading. Those courses which have required textbooks state this in the course description. If a course lists a textbook as recommended, its purchase is optional.

Prices:
Course prices vary with length of the course and the location (Toronto or Ottawa). The Certificate in Web Development (155 hours) will cost approximately $4165. The Certificate in Information Design(140 hours) will cost approximately $3570. In Toronto, the Certificate in Information Management (108 hours) will cost approximately $2975.

Advisory Committee:
The PLC is grateful to the dedicated members of the IT Advisory Committee for their advice and support: Albert Lam, Andy Li, Dave Senf, Keith Schingili-Roberts, Kim Silk, Siu Yeung.
